If you’re a registered medical cannabis patient, you’ve got the green light but there are important rules to follow. Our step-by-step guides are built to help you grow confidently, legally, and successfully right from your own home. From plant limits to privacy tips, we’ve got your back through every stage of the grow.
You must be 21 or older and hold a valid Illinois Medical Cannabis Registry Identification Card to grow cannabis at home
As a registered medical cannabis patient, you are allowed to grow up to 5 cannabis plants per household, each at least 5 inches tall. These plants must be securely stored within the residence, and any harvested cannabis over the general 30‑gram possession limit must remain inside your home
Plants must be grown in an enclosed, locked space (e.g. closet, garden shed) on your property, and must not be visible to the public. Must be on residential property that you own, rent, or have written permission to use.
If you're not a registered medical cannabis patient, you cannot grow at home - period. Illinois only allows home cultivation for qualified patients under the Medical Cannabis Patient Program.
❌ Recreational users are not permitted to grow
❌ Growing more than 5 plants may lead to fines or criminal charges
Homegrown cannabis must be kept in a locked, enclosed space that’s not visible to the public. Outdoor or open-area growing is not compliant with Illinois law.
❌ Do not grow on open patios, in greenhouses, or visible windows
❌ Never allow shared access by non-cardholding roommates or guests
A controlled indoor setup makes it easier to avoid pests, mold, and weak yields. Focus on the four pillars: light, air, temperature, and humidity.
❌ Avoid growing near drafts, radiators, or high-humidity areas like bathrooms
Start with trusted, medical-grade seeds that meet your health needs and grow well indoors. Not all strains are suitable for small, personal grows.
❌ Don’t use unknown bagseed - it may be unstable or carry pests
Overwatering and overfeeding are common mistakes. Cannabis prefers a careful balance of moisture and nutrients.
❌ Avoid feeding daily or watering on a fixed schedule - observe your plants
Your grow should remain private and secure. Treat your home cultivation setup with the same care you’d give to prescription medication.
❌ Never sell or distribute cannabis from your homegrow - it’s still illegal

Yes, but only for registered medical cannabis patients who are 21 years or older. Recreational users are not allowed to grow cannabis under current state law, and doing so may result in fines or criminal charges.
You can grow up to 5 mature cannabis plants total per residence, not per person. This means even if multiple qualifying patients live together, the household is still limited to five plants. Seedlings under 5 inches tall are not counted toward this limit.
Not unless it’s in a locked, enclosed structure that is completely hidden from public view. Outdoor grows in fenced yards or standard greenhouses do not meet legal requirements unless fully secured and private.
Yes, with landlord permission. If you rent your home, your landlord has the right to prohibit cultivation—even if you’re a registered patient. Always get written consent before starting a grow.
The law still limits cultivation to 5 plants per household. The number of medical cards in the home doesn’t increase the allowable plant count.
No. Homegrown cannabis is for personal medical use only. Selling, sharing, or gifting your cannabis—whether to friends, family, or other patients—is illegal.
No. Only the registered patient can legally grow their own cannabis. Caregivers may assist with purchasing, transporting, or administering cannabis—but not with cultivation.
No additional registration is required beyond your valid medical cannabis card. However, your grow must remain compliant with all state guidelines and could be subject to inspection under specific legal circumstances.
You may face civil fines or criminal charges, depending on how many plants you have over the limit. Penalties increase with the number of plants and whether there’s any intent to distribute.
You can legally store more than 30 grams only if it was grown under the medical program and kept securely inside your residence. You may not transport or share that excess amount outside your home.
