Must be 21 or older.
Up to 6 plants per adult, but only three plants can be flowering (budding) at one time. 12 plants maximum regardless of the number of adults living in the home. Medical patients may be allowed to grow more plants with proper authorization (depending on doctor recommendation and local limits).
Plants must be grown indoors in an enclosed, locked space that is not visible to the public.
Growing indoors in Colorado means you can sidestep unpredictable weather, but you still need to create the perfect indoor environment. Aim for daytime temperatures between 70–85°F and nighttime temperatures around 58–70°F to mimic ideal conditions. Humidity is key: too low, and your plants dry out fast; too high, and you risk mold. Shoot for 40–60% humidity, and consider using a humidifier or dehumidifier to hit the mark. Good airflow is essential - oscillating fans and exhaust systems keep fresh air circulating and prevent hot spots or stagnant pockets of stale air. Colorado’s dry climate is a double-edged sword indoors, so stay on top of these conditions for healthy, thriving plants.
Colorado’s unique environment - high altitude and dry air - makes it essential to choose cannabis genetics that can handle these challenges, even indoors. Indica-dominant hybrids are great choices because they’re generally shorter and more resilient to stress. Many growers in Colorado also swear by strains developed or bred locally for the state’s conditions - these tend to be better adapted to lower humidity and more intense light cycles. Start with clones or seeds from reputable sources, especially those recommended by local growers, to set yourself up for success from the beginning.
Lighting is your indoor sun - don’t skimp on it! High-quality LED lights are efficient and provide a broad spectrum that mimics natural sunlight, while ceramic metal halide (CMH) or light-emitting ceramic (LEC) lights can also deliver excellent results. Adjust your lights as the plants grow - start higher and move closer gradually to avoid burning young plants. Keep your canopy well-lit but not stressed by excessive heat or light intensity. Reflective walls or mylar can help bounce light around the space, ensuring every part of your plant gets the attention it needs for big, sticky buds.
Colorado’s tap water often leans alkaline, so adjusting your water’s pH to 6.0–6.5 is crucial for healthy nutrient uptake. Start with a balanced nutrient schedule and pay attention to how your plants respond - overfeeding can cause nutrient lockout, while underfeeding will leave them hungry for essential minerals. Since Colorado water can lack calcium and magnesium, consider adding CalMag supplements to boost plant health. Monitoring runoff pH and EC helps you fine-tune your feeding and keep your plants on track for explosive growth and rich, flavorful harvests.
In an indoor grow, maximizing your space is essential. Use low-stress training (LST) to gently bend and tie down branches, creating an even canopy and ensuring all bud sites get equal light. Topping can encourage your plants to branch out, creating a bushier plant that makes the most of your grow lights. For growers with a bit more experience, try a Screen of Green (SCROG) setup - this uses a net to support the canopy, boosting yields and airflow. These techniques turn a small indoor space into a powerhouse of production.
When your plants are finally ready - around 70% of pistils turned orange and trichomes cloudy - it’s time to harvest. But Colorado’s low humidity can dry buds too quickly, leading to harsh, flavorless smoke. Instead, aim for a slow dry in a dark room at 60°F and 60% humidity for about 7–10 days. Use fans for gentle airflow (not directly on the buds) to avoid mold. Once dry, cure your buds in airtight jars for at least 2–3 weeks, opening them daily to release excess moisture. This final step transforms your harvest into smooth, aromatic, and potent cannabis that truly stands out.
